[Fic] Maybe
Title: Maybe
Fandom/Game: Tales of the Abyss
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Tear/Natalia, mentioned Guy/Luke
Rating: PG
Warning: Post-game, but no spoilers
Word Count: 760
Maybe, she should have realized it sooner.
Maybe maybe maybe. That’s all that goes through her heads these days: maybe. Maybe if she had looked closer, maybe if she had told him sooner, maybe—
In the courtyard where they think no one can see them, Guy slips his hand into Luke’s.
The simple intimacy of the action is too much for her and she leaves, heels clicking quickly on the cold stone floor of the hallway. When she reaches her room she throws herself down on the bed, pulling a pillow close and clinging to it.
She feels like a child. So upset over something so trivial—she should be happy for them. She shouldn’t feel like this.
She was always foolish. Foolish enough to love Van, foolish enough to love Major Legretta.
Maybe she’s tired of love.
The sound of the door opening is deafening in the silence of the room, but Tear doesn’t move; it’s too humiliating to be caught like this, like some sort of love-sick child.
Maybe she is a love-sick child.
The door clicks shut, but Tear still doesn’t move; when the bed dips from the weight of another person, she doesn’t know whether or not to hope it’s Luke.
“Tear?”
Tear relaxes, just a little, at the sound of a feminine voice; Natalia.
Maybe it was better that it wasn’t Luke.
Loosening her grip on the pillow, Tear straightens herself out but doesn’t yet turn. “I’d, prefer not to be seen like this.”
“I know.” Tear shivers when she feels a warm hand stroke her hair, traveling down her back. “I saw you run in.”
“I wish you hadn’t,” she says softly, leaning into Natalia’s touch. “I’m, not usually like this.”
“I know,” Natalia repeats, drawing her hand back. Tear frowns; is she leaving already?
The bed shifts again as Natalia lies down next to Tear, resting her head on her shoulder. “You really love him, don’t you?”
Tear swallows. “I should be happy for him. Guy, is good for him.”
Natalia just nods, sliding an arm over Tear’s waist. The warmth is… pleasant. Tear finds herself blushing and not quite knowing why.
“You’re good for him, too, Tear,” Natalia says, pressed too close against her. “He’s missing out on a lot.”
Tear bites her lip, fists clenching. “Don’t say that. Please.”
Natalia’s hand is pressed against her stomach, something so, so—
“What are you doing?”
Natalia’s fingers slide down, resting on her hip. “I’m sorry.” She doesn’t yet move her hand. “You’re beautiful.”
Tear squirms, hips rolling beneath Natalia’s long fingers. “Natalia…”
“I’m, glad he’s with Guy.” The grip on Tear’s hip is tight. “It’s selfish of me, but…”
“I don’t love you.” Tear cringes at her words, too harsh and too cold. Luke used to call her cold. “I’m sorry.”
“I know,” Natalia replies, laughing softly, bitterly. “I didn’t expect you to.”
A pregnant pause hangs in the air, the silence between the two stifling. Tear turns in Natalia’s arms, swallowing hard. “Why?”
Tear likes the smile Natalia gives her. “You’re strong.” She doesn’t stop smiling. “You’ve always been strong, Tear. You weren’t cold, like Luke said. You’re caring. You’re smart. You’re… wonderful.”
When Natalia leans up to kiss her, Tear doesn’t pull away. Her lips are plump and Tear makes a pleased noise, shuddering.
Natalia’s still smiling when she pulls back, cupping Tear’s cheek. “Thank you.”
Tear doesn’t know why she kisses Natalia again, lips still tingling from the first time. But she likes how Natalia feels, how warm her lips are, how soft Natalia’s body is, pressed against hers.
When they pull apart Natalia rests her head on Tear’s breasts, closing her eyes. Tear bites her lip. She looks so happy…
“I, I don’t love you,” Tear repeats, wrapping her arms around Natalia. “But, I like you.”
“I’m not going to be Luke’s replacement.” Natalia looks up at her. Tear admires the conviction in her voice, the sharpness in her eyes. “I’m no one’s replacement.”
Tear kisses the top of her head. “No, you’ll never be.”
Natalia takes her hand, giving it a squeeze. “Good.” She kisses Tear’s finger tips, humming softly. “You’re mine now.”
“I like that,” Tear laughs, and kisses Natalia’s fingers back. “The idea is, nice. You’re nice.”
“I’m going to make you happier than Luke ever could.” She squeezes Tear’s hands again, breath hitching. “I swear to it.”
Tear laughs, excited and a little nervous, and kisses Natalia again. Natalia kisses back and Tear thinks she could get used to this.
Maybe love isn’t so bad.
